Welcome

Hey everyone,

Welcome to our wedding website. As you may have guessed, Burton and I are getting married. We are planning to elope privately sometime this coming year. Though there has been some disappointment about our not having a wedding, look at it this way. If nothing else, it has given us the opportunity to throw a bigger, better party. A bonus for all of you! We are planning a reception on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Big Butte Lodge in Cruso, North Carolina.

First, let me tell you a little about the Big Butte Lodge (“Big Butt” for those of you in the know). Big Butte Lodge is 90 acres located on the Pigeon River. It’s very rustic; I like to call it camping with electric and running water, but it’s beautiful. It has one large central lodge with several cabins going up the mountain. It also features several ponds including the “high lake” (a large pond for you Michiganders). If you would like to take a closer look, the website is www.bigbutte.net(built by Burton).

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to hold our reception at Big Butte. It is a place that holds many memories for us as a couple and for Burton as a child. We excited to be able to share Big Butte and create more memories there with all our friends and family. It is a place that we will be able to return to year after year and relive the memories we’ll make with all of you in the coming year. A special thanks to Bess and Rod Baird for their generous gift to us. We love you and are so grateful to have you in our lives.

Now onto the reception itself. Our reception is not going to be a typical wedding reception. I wanted to take this opportunity to explain what will be happening that weekend and what options you have.

For those who are joining us for Saturday, there are several options. First, you can just come for dinner on Saturday night, hang out as long as you like and then go home or spend the night. Second, you can join us earlier in the day (whenever you like) and hang out, go swimming, take a hike, etc. and then either stay the night and head home whenever on Sunday or you can head home at the end of Saturday evening.

For those who would like to make a weekend out of the reception, you can come out on Friday afternoon or evening and spend the night, hang out on Saturday, and then either spend another night or head home after the festivities. In other words, come whenever you want and stay as long as you want, just let us know when you are coming and which nights, if any, you are planning to stay ( see the RSVP/Accommodations page).

For our out-of-town family and friends, we have the facilities for the entire week of August 7th-13th (that’s Friday to Thursday). We’d like to invite you to plan a vacation and stay for as much or as little of the week as you would like. Burton and I put some information together for everyone, and sent out an email, about hiking trails, on and off-road biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and anything else we can think of that might be of interest for the week. Email me if you didn't get it. Let me know if you are looking for something specific and I’ll look into for you.

In terms of attire, I will be entirely over-dressed for the occasion as Burton has insisted that I be a princess for the day. However, we encourage all of you to wear whatever you would like whether that be formal or informal. You may want to bring a bathing suit, a change of clothes, something warm to put on at night, etc. At the moment we are not planning on tables and chairs. There is one large dining room table in the lodge for those of you who would like to sit down and eat. We request that if you have any camp chairs bring them (bring extra if you have them) and if not bring a blanket to picnic on (this may determine your attire for the evening as well).

Finally, I wanted to talk about food. I’m planning to purchase several cases of champagne and wine. I’m also planning on getting an assortment of beer from Karl's shop However, if there is something you like, bring it. We are planning on a potluck dinner on Saturday night and are asking that you bring one thing, that way everyone has something to eat that they like. For you locals, it would be great if you could bring extra of whatever you are making as all of my family and most of Burton’s are from out of town. In addition, we will be providing some food including a main course. We are thinking about meat and veggie lasagnas We look forward to seeing you all.

Also I made a list of stuff you may want to bring.
  • Towels
  • Change of Shoes and clothes
  • Food - There is a grill and kitchens for those of you staying.
  • Sunscreen – if you’re going swimming.
  • Swimsuits – if you’re going swimming.
  • Camp chairs or blankets
  • Flash light – don’t worry there is power.
  • Camping gear/tent - if you’re planning on camping.

Lots of love,
Kate and Burton
